Journal #8
Journal #8 Due March 21st **Your journal must be at least 150 words**
Who developed imaginary numbers? Do a little research to find out why imaginary numbers started. Why do you think mathematicians would develop imaginary numbers?
Solve the following problem for the two values of x.
(your answer should include the number i):
-4x^2 + 8x -10 = 0
**Remember ^ means squared.

Journal #7
Journal on Factoring
For Friday 3/7 your journal is on the following:
You have been given the quadratic equation:
if you cannot see the photo above the equation is: y = x^2 + 6x - 7
* ^2 means squared *
Please solve this quadratic using both FOIL(factoring) and complete the square. How do these two method compare? Are your answers the same? Is one method more useful than the other? Please support your answer with mathematical examples.
**Remember your journal must be 150 words**

Extra Credit Journal
The following journal needs to be at least 200 words and is due on Januray 29th.
Geometric and Arithmetic Sequences:
Compare and contrast geometric and arithmetic sequences. (What do they have in common? How are they different?)
What is different about explicit and recursive formulas? Why do you think we write both? Is one more useful than the other? In what situation would it be best to use a recursive formula? In what situation would it be best to use an explicit formula?

Exponential Growth
Watch the following video:
http://www.khanacademy.org/math/trigonometry/exponential_and_logarithmic_func/exp_growth_decay/v/exponential-growth-functions
Respond to the video, then come up with your own real life example of exponential growth. Your journal entry must be a minimum of 150 words.

Journal #5
Journal Linear Inequalities Due Friday 12/13
Jim owns a moving company. On a particular job Jim was moving some beds and sofas, and was interested in determining how many beds and/or sofas he could load into a semi-trucks trailer. Jim knows that the trailer can hold at most 80 beds and 44 sofas. Jim also knows that the total volume of the trailer is 4000 cubic feet and that each bed takes up 50 cubic feet and each sofa takes up 90 cubic feet. Write an inequality to represent the following:
a.) How many beds the trailer can hold? Explain what this inequality represents.
b.) How many sofas the trailer can hold? Explain what this inequality represents.
c.) How many sofas and beds can fit in the total cubic feet of the trailer? Explain what this inequality represents.
Solve the system of linear inequalities by graphing. Be sure to indicate where the solution is.

Journal #4 Function Notation
Must be 150 Words, Due Friday 12/6
What is function notation? Why do we use it? What do f(x) and y have in common? Give an example of an equation in function notation and solve for a value. Explain the process.
*Extra Credit 2 points each*
Try to complete i and j on the function notation homework sheet.

Journal Linear Equations
When writing a linear equation which method do you prefer: Standard form (Ax + By= C), Slope-Intercept Form (y=mx+b), of Point-Slope from (y-y1 = m(x-x1) ). Why? Why do you think we learn different ways to write linear equations?
Due 11/22 Must be 150 words
Extra 5 points (optional)
Find a real life situation involving a linear equation or a real life situation you can apply linear equations to. Use the news, internet, or other resources. You must cite the source of the information.

Journal Week 2
What connections can you make between slope/rate of change, direct variation, and arithmetic sequences? Reflect on what these topics have in common and how they relate to one another. Use the videos watched this week and class notes to refer to. Also list any questions you have from this week's topics.
Must be 150 Words and in a specific notebook for math journals!
Due Friday 11/8

Journal Set Up
Each week students will be given a prompt to answer in their journals. Students will receive the journal assignment on Monday and the assignment will be due Friday. Students will also respond to the math videos that they watch throughout the week. The journals will count as a homework grade worth 10 points each week. These journals should be completed in composition notebooks and I will respond to each entry the student gives.
Responses to Math Videos:
Name
Name of Video
Date
Your response should be at least 3 sentences, in which you state what the topic of the video is and what you learned or still have questions about.
Response to Weekly Prompt:
Name
Journal Title
Date
Week October 29th Journal Prompt 1
What is a root? Explain the process of finding a root. Write about your understanding of a root and how it applies to any previously learned topics. Write down any questions you still have about this weeks topics.
